Book Review: Moondust

Moondust coverOne of the 3 books that I have read this summer include Andrew Smith’s Moondust. I have read many, many books on the Apollo Moon program and most of them have focused on the preparation for the missions, the people involved, and the actual mission. What makes Moondust different is that it focuses on what happened after the mission. Of the 12 astronauts that have landed on the Moon, 9 remain today (Sadly we may reach a time where there will be no astronauts alive that have set foot on extra terrestrial soil). Andrew Smith seeks out those 9 men and the people who worked with them, and tries to extract from them how going to the Moon has affected their lives. For some, it triggered profound changes in their lives. For others it seemed to have reinforced their preexisting personalities. For me, the book reaffirmed that Alan Bean is one of my favorite astronauts and that Pete Conrad was a true original and has been sorely missed since his death.
