Marathon, Ant Farm, and Evolution

Happy new year to everyone! Now that the holidays are over and I am currently not training for a marathon, I can focus some of my attention back on ScienceFix.com. I did finish the California International Marathon in 3:43, lowering my previous best by 40 minutes. I certainly hit a severe wall at mile 22, but I managed to finish. I might do another marathon this spring…maybe.

I purchased an AntWorks ant farm before break, ordered some harvester ants, and have watched them everyday. In years past I would keep fish in my classroom for students to enjoy, but his year I didn’t feel like spending energy on cleaning the tank, so I thought an ant farm would be an easy substitute. Follow this link to view a short video of the AntWorks ant habitat in action.

Finally as a science teacher I was pleased with the recent ruling that intelligent design cannot be taught in a Pennsylvania school district. If you believe in intelligent design I won’t argue with you. You definitely have the right to believe in that. I think a lot of people out there don’t understand what a scientific theory is though and that contributes greatly to the misunderstanding. Intelligent design is a concept, not a scientific theory and thus should not be taught in science classes alongside evolution and natural selection. If you wish to learn more about scientific theory, evolution, and intelligent design Wikipedia is an excellent source.
