I have found a great RSS feed for education technology articles. The site is Educational Technology. It is a blog written by Ray Schroeder. I highly recommend subscribing to the RSS feed of it. It covers all levels of education and it is updated pretty much daily. One of the interesting articles provided by his blog led to a very unique and interesting class website. It is the 5th Grade Polar Bears by teacher Mr. Roemer. What I like about the site is that it is very parent friendly and student friendly. There are two innovative parts to it. First there is a blog that it run by the students. The students describe what is happening in class during an activity. Pictures accompany the description, which is usually well written. The students get to participate and practice writing, while parents at home get a taste of what goes on in a typical day. The other innovative aspect is the password protected picture gallery. Only students and parents with passwords are able to access the class pictures, thus addressing the sticky problem of parents not wanting their child’s picture on the internet for all to see.
Even though this site is dedicated to science education, I could not proceed without adding my thoughts and reflections to aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The people, our fellow countrymen, deserve and demand the best disaster response possible. They deserve the necessities of life: water, food, clothing, medical attention, shelter. I am saddened to see that this hasn’t been the case. As a school teacher is saddens me to see children without the necessities in life. These children will not have schools that they can learn in any time soon. Please donate money to the American Red Cross.
